Apex Consultative Approach USMC

USMCA = Trade Agreement Details

Approximately 10,000 northbound trucks pass through the Port of Laredo daily, primarily via the World Trade Bridge, which connects Laredo, Texas, with Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. This makes Laredo the busiest land port in the U.S., handling a substantial share of trade between the two countries.

The current trade agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico is the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

It replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on July 1, 2020.

The USMCA is also referred to as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) in Canada and the Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá (T-MEC) in Mexico.

  • Automotive Industry:
    • Requires 75% of vehicle components to be manufactured in North America (up from 62.5% under NAFTA).
    • Sets labor provisions requiring 40-45% of auto content to be made by workers earning at least $16/hour.
  • Agriculture:
    • Expands market access for U.S. dairy, poultry, and eggs into Canada.
    • Maintains zero tariffs on agricultural products traded between the three countries.
  • Digital Trade:
    • Includes rules to facilitate cross-border data flows.
    • Protects intellectual property in digital trade.
  • Labor and Environmental Standards:
    • Strengthens labor rights and enforcement mechanisms.
    • Includes commitments to environmental protection and sustainability.
  • Intellectual Property:
    • Extends copyright terms and includes provisions for protecting trade secrets and biotechnology.
  • Dispute Resolution:
    • Preserves key dispute resolution mechanisms, particularly for state-to-state disputes.
  • Sunset Clause:
    • The agreement includes a 16-year sunset clause, with reviews every six years to determine if it should be updated or extended.
